The Z-Pipe works by forcing a true mixture between both exhaust banks. Instead of allowing the two banks to simply crash into each other like a typical X-pipe, the Z-Pipe splits and smoothly recombines flow from each side. This balanced exchange helps the exhaust pulses work together, creating a stronger scavenging effect. Scavenging uses the low-pressure area behind one exhaust pulse to help pull the next pulse through the system, improving volumetric efficiency, resulting in more power and torque.
At the same time, the Z-Pipe is designed to maintain a consistent, unrestricted flow path with zero cross-sectional reduction. This helps maintain high exhaust gas velocity and reduces backpressure. By comparison, many traditional X-pipes can create a 10–40% reduction in effective area, along with a larger crossover chamber where exhaust velocity drops and turbulence significantly increase.
